Choosing the best substitute for ground mustard depends on what you have on hand and what you’re using it for:

Prepared Mustard

Dijon Mustard

This is the closest substitute in terms of flavor and heat. Substitute 1 tablespoon dijon mustard for 1 teaspoon dry mustard. It works well in most recipes, except dry rubs or spice blends.

Yellow Mustard or Stone Ground Mustard

These are milder and spicier substitutes, respectively. Again, substitute 1 tablespoon prepared mustard for 1 teaspoon dry mustard, but taste and adjust as needed.

Dry Spices

Mustard Seeds

If you have a grinder, you can toast mustard seeds and grind them yourself. This offers the freshest and most potent flavor, but requires a bit more effort. Use ½ teaspoon ground mustard seeds for 1 teaspoon dry mustard.

Horseradish Powder

This packs a powerful punch, so start with a tiny amount (¼ teaspoon for 1 teaspoon dry mustard) and gradually increase to taste. It complements mustard’s heat but has a distinct flavor.

Turmeric

Turmeric adds a similar yellow color and has a slightly peppery flavor, but it’s milder and lacks the intense kick of dry mustard. Use a 1:1 ratio, but be aware of the different taste profile.

Wasabi Powder

Similar to horseradish, use sparingly due to its potent heat. Use ¼ teaspoon for 1 teaspoon dry mustard.

Chinese 5-Spice Powder

This blend contains star anise, cloves, cinnamon, fennel, and Sichuan peppercorns. It won’t be an exact substitute but adds warmth and complexity. Start with a pinch and adjust to taste.

Tips

  • Remember that substitutions may not be exact, so adjust the amount based on the spice’s potency and your taste preferences.
  • Start with a smaller amount of the substitute and gradually add more to taste. Remember, you can always add more, but you can’t take it away!
  • If you’re feeling adventurous, you can experiment with combining different spices to create your own unique flavor blend.
