Why should you use your air fryer to make “baked” potatoes?

While I love making baked potatoes in the Instant Pot and Slow Cooker Baked Potatoes, baked potatoes cook up quicker and easier in the air fryer because there’s no need for pressure to build in the instant pot or a need to preheat an oven. Plus the skins are extra crispy & delicious from all that hot air circulating around them.

You’ll love how delicious and fluffy they are. The perfect vessel for all of your favorite toppings – sour cream, butter, cheese, bacon, chives, chili. I also love them topped with this Lebanese Garlic Sauce.

These potatoes are amazing! It was my first attempt in my new Instant Pot air fryer. The skin was nice and crispy and the potatoes soft and fluffy. This will be the only way I make baked potatoes again!

What potato is best for a baked potato?

  • For this recipe I used russet potatoes. You could also use sweet potatoes or yukon gold potatoes. Cook time will be the same as listed below.

How to make PERFECT air fryer potatoes

Potatoes on tray seasoned with salt and pepper.

Step 1

Heat air fryer + season potatoes

  • Heat air fryer to 390 degrees.
  • Rub oil over potatoes and sprinkle evenly with kosher salt.

Step 2

Air fry

  • Place in air fryer basket and cook for 40 – 50 minutes, until they can be pierced easily with a fork.

Step 3

Enjoy

  • Serve with your favorite toppings.
  • See below for my favorite suggestions.

How long to cook baked potatoes in the air fryer

  • Small Potatoes (size of woman’s fist) – 40 minutes
  • Medium Potatoes (standard size) – 50 minutes
  • Large Potatoes (size of hand) – 60 minutes

Tip: Be sure your potatoes are all the same size. Varying sizes mean varying cooking times. Be sure that your potatoes are all about the same size, and use my cooking chart below to time things correctly.

The most difficult part of air frying potatoes is timing them correctly. Just like you would do in the oven, you’ll want to check them after their cook time. If they pierce easily with a fork, they are done. If not, just put them back in the fryer and cook for 5-10 minutes longer.

How many potatoes can I cook in the air fryer?

  • The amount of potatoes you can cook at one time depends on the size of your air fryer basket. I can fit three medium sized russet potatoes into my air fryer, but there are larger and smaller versions out there.
  • The cook time will remain the same regardless of how many potatoes you are cooking.

How to make ahead + store

These Air Fryer Baked Potatoes are perfect for meal prep. They’ll keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days. Use a microwave to reheat and top with your favorite toppings.

The skins were so tasty and when using a VERY large potato (sometimes I can’t find normal size!) we ate the insides as normally prepared and ate the skin, the leftover insides and added cheese reheated – it was amazing!

Hi Winnie – My air fryer doesn’t have different settings… I would say use the “air fry” button. ๐Ÿ™‚
