Ingredients

Ingredients for feta dressing labeled on wooden tray.
  • Feta cheese – Pick up a high-quality feta cheese for a salty, tangy, and fresh Greek-inspired flavor profile. More on this below!
  • Sour cream and mayonnaise – Combining the feta with a blend of sour cream and mayo gives the dressing the creamiest consistency possible and a tangy base. Use full-fat sour cream for the best texture and flavor or substitute Greek yogurt for some or all of the sour cream if you’re craving a lighter version.
  • Milk – Any type of milk goes here (dairy or non-dairy), though whole milk is the creamiest.
  • Lemon juice
  • Dried oregano – For a burst of aromatic Greek flavor! Fresh oregano works as a substitute but you’ll need about 1 tablespoon instead since the flavor will be less concentrated.
  • Garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper

What is the best kind of feta to use?

Traditional Greek feta cheese, of course! It’s typically made from sheep’s milk or a mixture of sheep and goat’s milk, which gives it a rich, tangy flavor and a creamy texture that blends beautifully into dressings.

While you’re shopping, look for feta packed in brine, as this will maintain its freshness and moisture. If you can’t find Greek feta, buy a high-quality Bulgarian or Israeli feta instead.

How to make feta dressing

Add all of the feta salad dressing ingredients to a food processor or blender. Blend until smooth and creamy.

Enjoy the dressing right away or chill it in the fridge until you’re ready to use it.

Tips and tricks

  • For the smoothest consistency, blend the ingredients at a low speed before gradually increasing the speed.
  • No blender or food processor? Crumble the feta cheese as finely as possible and whisk the ingredients together in a bowl. Or, shake the ingredients in a mason jar or airtight container until emulsified.
  • If your feta dressing is too thick, blend in one tablespoon of milk at a time until you reach your desired consistency. If it’s too thin, add more sour cream or mayonnaise to thicken it.
  • Chill the dressing for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld together beautifully. Before serving, give it one last taste and adjust the salt, pepper, and lemon juice as needed.
  • Want to customize the flavor? Add more fresh herbs (like dill, parsley, or basil), red pepper flakes, lemon zest, roasted garlic, or anchovy paste for a fun twist.

Ways to use feta dressing

The feta dressing is a must-have with Mediterranean-style salads and bowls. Drizzle it over this Greek Tomato Cucumber Salad or this Mediterranean Tuna Chickpea Salad for a creamy, salty twist. If you’re in the mood for a grain bowl, enjoy it with my Greek Lamb Bowl or this Chicken Gyro Bowl.

Good news: this creamy feta dressing isn’t just for salads! It’s versatile enough to use on endless other dishes, such as:

  • Snack dip – Surround it with falafel, pita chips, or cut carrots, celery, bell peppers, and cucumbers for dipping.
  • Spread – Spread a generous layer on sandwiches and wraps like traditional Greek gyros or Lamb Lettuce Wraps.
  • Finishing sauce – Take your grilled or roasted broccoli, sweet potatoes, zucchini, eggplant, and bell peppers to the next level with a drizzle of this dressing over top.
  • Meat marinade – The acidity in the dressing will help tenderize chicken, lamb, pork chops, and salmon.

Storing

Store the leftover feta salad dressing in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. It may separate as it sits, so give it a good stir or shake before serving.

I don’t recommend freezing the dressing because dairy tends to become gritty after thawing.
