I’m all about air fryer appetizers because they’re (1) easy to make, (2) mostly hands-off, and (3) a healthier alternative to deep frying. You’ll find me air frying a batch of chicken tenders, zucchini fries, or potstickers when my crunchy, salty snack cravings hit or when I need something quick to serve at a party.
Why you’ll love them!
These Air Fryer Pita Chips are another party appetizer staple. They’re made with only a handful of ingredients and get super crispy and crunchy in the air fryer, making them the best vessel for all kinds of dips and spreads. Whip up a batch in 15 minutes and put them out at the party—your guests won’t be able to get enough!
What’s better is that you can really get creative when it comes to customizing the flavor of your homemade pita chips. Whether you’re in the mood for classic sea salt, Italian seasoning, a spicy kick, or even something sweet, the choice is yours.
Ingredients
- Pita bread – When air fried, pita bread takes on a light, airy, and crispy texture. You don’t need a lot of oil to achieve this, either! Feel free to use whole wheat pita or regular pita bread.
- Olive oil – The pitas are coated with a light layer of olive oil to help them to become golden brown and crisp. I like using olive oil but avocado oil will work just as well.
- Kosher salt – The salt plays a key role in flavoring the pita chips and making sure they’re super crunchy. Sea salt works just as well if you don’t have kosher salt on hand.
- Garlic powder – I seasoned the chips with garlic powder for extra flavor, but there are endless seasonings you can use. Scroll down to see more options!
How to make pita chips in the air fryer
Use a sharp knife or a pizza cutter to cut the pita bread into 8 triangles, then place them in a large bowl.
Season the pita triangles with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of salt and garlic powder (or your desired seasonings). Gently toss until the pieces are coated evenly.
Arrange the pita triangles in a single layer in the air fryer basket and cook for 5 minutes. Toss and continue cooking until they’re golden brown and crispy. Enjoy!
Tips and tricks
- Air fry the pita chips in batches if your air fryer basket isn’t big enough to lay them all in a single layer. If they’re overlapping each other, the chips won’t cook properly or become crunchy.
- Watch the pita chips closely towards the end of the cooking time to prevent them from burning.
- The pita chips are best when they’re served immediately after cooking. That’s when they’re the most crispy and delicious!

Get creative and customize your air fryer pita chips by seasoning them with any of these fun flavors:

FAQs
Can I bake the pita chips instead?
Yes, you can bake the pita chips if you don’t have an air fryer. Prepare the chips as normal and lay them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake at 375°F for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the chips are golden brown and crispy, flipping halfway. Keep in mind that the baking times may vary depending on your oven, so keep an eye on the chips to prevent them from burning.
How do you make gluten-free air fryer pita chips?
Simply use gluten-free pita bread or homemade gluten-free flatbread instead of regular pita.
Can I double this recipe?
Go ahead and double or triple this recipe when you’re serving a crowd. Just make sure to air fry the pitas in 2 or 3 batches so each one can cook evenly and turn golden brown.
Storing
Store the leftover pita chips in an airtight container or ziplock bag at room temperature for 3 to 4 days. If the chips start to lose their crispiness, you can reheat them in the air fryer for a few minutes to revive their crunch.
