The perfect blend of sweet, tart, creamy and tangy, this blackberry goat cheese spread is perfect to serve when you’re inviting friends over. It’s the perfect addition to any cheese plate.

Also highly suggested? Pairing it with my Blackberry Bellinis.

🛒 Ingredients

  • Blackberries – With this recipe, what really shines are those delicious Oregon blackberries. Fresh or frozen blackberries will work in this recipe. In the summer, we’re lucky to have fresh blackberries growing in our backyard, but they normally don’t take off until late in the season. So, I always have a bag of frozen berries on hand in the freezer. Fun Fact: Did you know that more than 90% of U.S. grown, frozen blackberries are from Oregon? With the perfect, fertile soils, warm days and cool nights, Oregon produces the most perfect berries.
  • Goat Cheese – Also called chevre. You’ll want the kind that is sold in logs. Don’t love the tanginess of goat cheese? You can also use cream cheese in this recipe.
  • Fresh Thyme – I like to use fresh thyme in this recipe because I also love to sprinkle on some thyme leaves as a final garnish.  However, you can easily use dried thyme in this recipe. Use only ½ teaspoon of dried thyme if you are making this substitution.
  • Lemon – I love the extra tang that the lemon juice and lemon zest adds to this recipe.
  • Honey – I add honey to the blackberry compote to add a bit of sweetness. I also love to drizzle a bit over the finished goat cheese.
  • Salt

How to make Blackberry Goat Cheese

Make Blackberry Compote

  • In a small skillet, heat the blackberries, lemon juice, honey and salt.
  • Cook for 5-6 minutes, breaking up the berries with a potato masher or a fork.
  • Remove from the heat and stir in the lemon zest and thyme.
  • Note: You can also use dried thyme (use ½ tsp.), or any other fresh herb that you prefer. Basil, tarragon or rosemary would also be delicious.
  • Let cool for about 20 minutes.

Roll Goat Cheese Log in Blackberry Compote

  • Lay out a sheet of plastic wrap and spoon half of the blackberry mixture onto the plastic wrap, about the same shape and size as your goat cheese log.
  • Place the goat cheese on top.
  • Spread the remaining blackberry mixture on top and wrap tightly in the plastic wrap.
  • Refrigerate for about an hour, or until ready to serve.

Garnish

I like to garnish my blackberry goat cheese log with an extra sprinkling of fresh thyme leaves and a drizzle of honey. However, this is totally optional.

How to serve it

Plate your blackberry goat cheese log on a platter or serving tray.  I love serving it with whole grain crackers, water crackers, or even crostini.

FAQ

Can I use another berry besides blackberries?

Sure! This recipe also works well with blueberries, raspberries and strawberries.

How long do I need to chill my goat cheese?

It’s best to let your goat cheese chill for at least an hour after coating it in the berry mixture. The chilling time helps the berry mixture adhere to the goat cheese and allows its flavor to sink in a bit.

How long does it last?

Store your blackberry goat cheese log tightly wrapped in the refrigerator for up to one week. You can also freeze it. To do so, wrap it in saran wrap, then aluminum foil, and place in the freezer for up to 3 months. To use, thaw overnight in the fridge.

Erin’s wine pairings

  • Pinot Noir – With hints of dark berries, and a bright acidity, Pinot makes a great pairing for this goat cheese spread.
  • Sauvignon Blanc – The grassy notes of goat cheese pair really nicely with a bright Sauvignon Blanc.

Fantastic! Tried when blackberries & melons were in season! My edits: As doubled the recipe, had to cook fresh blackberry mixture 15-16 min; added generous 1/4 teaspoon white pepper @ end of cooking. For a creamier log, blended 3oz reg Philly Cream Cheese w/ 13oz Goat Cheese. Divided cheese mixture in half, made 2 logs, indented ‘bottom log’ down the middle so I could also add a portion of the blackberry mixture in middle. Served w/ whole wheat crackers; cucumber, jicama & honeydew melon spears. Tip: Serving dish-wise, do plate crackers & produce (if using) separate from the deliciously messy cheese log. Appetizer for a party, a big hit! Next time might add toasted hazelnuts or pecans.

Not easy to wrap without the blackberry mixture leaking out over the counter. I ended up putting the wrapped cheese and blackberry mixture in a ziplocked gallon storage bag rolled to keep the juice from leaking out.
