I recently discovered Firstleaf and I’m completely obsessed. Learn how their wine club works and how to find the best recipes to pair with those wines using Platings & Pairings wine pairing guides.

Do you enjoy trying new wines but don’t know where to start?

I’ve got the perfect solution!

Firstleaf is a wine club that delivers personalized wine recommendations to your door anytime you want. With Firstleaf, you can discover new wines that you love.

I’ve become obsessed with their wine club for so many reasons:

  1. No needing to scour the store for that perfect bottle. They send me affordable wines that are always delicious.
  2. I love exploring new wineries. With Firstleaf, you’ll get wines from small producers that you don’t often find in stores.
  3. It gives you an opportunity to explore new varieties. With the Firstleaf tasting quiz, simply answer a few fun questions about the types of wines that you currently enjoy, and they’ll send you some bottles that fit in with your taste profile.

And, with Platings & Pairings, you can experiment with new recipes and wine pairings!

How it Works

The Firstleaf process is not only informative, but fun too! Simply take their taste profile quiz, which leads you through a quick set of questions about your personal tastes and wine preferences, and they’ll put together the perfect box of 6-wines for you to try.

Here’s a couple of the sample questions that are asked:

How to Pair Firstleaf with Recipes from Platings and Pairings

Here are a few tips for pairing Firstleaf wines with recipes from Platings and Pairings Blog:

  • Consider the weight and flavor of the dish. Lighter dishes pair well with lighter wines, while heavier dishes pair well with heavier wines. For example, you would pair a light radicchio salad with a Sauvignon Blanc, while you would pair a hearty steak with a Cabernet Sauvignon.
  • Think about the acidity in the dish. Acidic dishes pair well with high-acid wines, while fatty dishes pair well with low-acid wines. For example, you would pair a tomato-based pasta dish with a Chianti, while you would pair a creamy mushroom risotto with a Chardonnay.
  • Match the flavors in the dish with the flavors in the wine. For example, you would pair pork chops with cherry sauce with a Pinot Noir, which has cherry aromas.
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment. The best way to find wine pairings that you love is to experiment. Try different wines with different dishes and see what you like best.

Bonus Tip

At the top of Platings & Pairings, there’s a drop down menu where you can choose the type of wine that you have on hand, and you’ll be provided with all the recipes on my site that pair perfectly with that wine! So, when your Firstleaf shipment arrives, just select your wine type from the menu, and find a wide variety of recipes to cook up with that bottle of wine.

Favorite Wine Pairings

  • Cabernet Sauvignon with Steak Diane: This is a classic pairing of a full-bodied red wine with a hearty meat dish. The Cabernet Sauvignon’s bold flavors will complement the richness of the steak, while the diane sauce adds a touch of creaminess and complexity.
  • Grenache with Butternut Squash Bisque: A light-red wine works well with this creamy soup that’s topped with a delightful maple cream.
  • Rosé with Curry Chicken Skewers: The berry flavors of rosé perfectly compliment Indian and spicy Thai dishes.
  • Chardonnay with Lemon Chicken Piccata: This pairing highlights the complementary flavors of lemon and butter. The Chardonnay’s acidity will cut through the richness of the dish, while its fruit flavors will complement the lemon and chicken.
  • Pinot Noir with Miso Salmon: This is a light-bodied red wine that pairs well with the delicate flavors of salmon and its acidity will cleanse the palate.
  • Riesling with Thai Curry Meatballs: This pairing highlights the contrast between sweet and spicy flavors. The Riesling’s sweetness will balance out the spiciness of the curry, while its acidity will cut through the richness of the dish.
  • Sauvignon Blanc with Grilled Mango Chicken: This pairing highlights the complementary flavors of citrus and fruit. The Sauvignon Blanc’s acidity will cut through the richness of the chicken thighs, while its citrus flavors will complement the mango glaze.

No matter what your taste preferences are, Firstleaf has a wine for you. And with Platings and Pairings, you’ll have access to delicious recipes that are perfect for pairing with your Firstleaf wines.

  1. Very interesting! I actually had a negative experience with them. I began ordering at the beginning of the pandemic and I kept getting wines I didn’t like. I called which did no good. They didn’t believer in Rieslings (have your wine experts been to Austria and Germany??) and never had Italian pinot grigios. I can’t remember if I even got any from Oregon. Anyway, I hope you have a better experience!
